NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News City Council voted Tuesday night to allow its city manager to negotiate ending leases voluntarily with tenants at a building along Canon Boulevard in the Greater Oyster Point District.
City leaders say it’s part of a long-term plan towards centralizing their government operations.
“We are growing at a pace that certain buildings no longer work for us,” said Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. “So in the future of Newport News, we’re looking to just put things under one or two buildings. We have a lot of annexes around Newport News, so you have things that are in Denbigh, or things that are in downtown or in central. And right now, we’re growing at such a pace that it makes it so much easier to have meetings [where] everyone’s in one space.”…
