Newport News man pleads guilty to stealing deceased neighbor’s Social Security benefits

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man pled guilty Monday to withdrawing social security benefits from his deceased neighbor’s bank account.

Beginning on July 5, 2018, Alonzo Darren McClary, 62, held power of attorney to make decisions for his elderly neighbor if the neighbor was incapacitated or died. According to court documents, McClary occasionally withdrew money from the neighbor’s bank account to assist the neighbor as needed.

Following the neighbor’s death on Feb. 20, 2020, the Social Security Administration (SSA) continued to pay benefits into the neighbor’s bank account. McClary did not inform SSA of his passing and continued to withdraw money from the neighbor’s bank account…
