NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)— Hundreds of Norfolk residents are enjoying free meals on Saturday after a community event distributed $40,000 in grocery gift cards at a local supermarket.
The annual event, held at the E. Palmer Supermarket in the Berkley area of Norfolk, has seen a significant surge in popularity since its inception. Lines wrapped around the building on Berkley Avenue as residents waited hours for assistance.
“What’s most humbling is to see the folks who have been out here since 5 and 6 a.m., to ensure they get a high value dollar gift card,” said Charlene Morring, the Morring Community Foundation’s president. She noted the event specifically aids “those on fixed incomes that can get a little extra help before the end of the month.”…
