Portsmouth man sentenced for obtaining auto loans with fake identity

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Portsmouth man was sentenced Thursday to two years and six months after using a false social security number to obtain auto loans.

On July 23, 2021, Deviyon Nichols, 33, submitted an application to receive an auto loan from a bank to purchase a 2014 BMW X-5. He used a fraudulent South Carolina driver’s license under the name “Davyion Martin” and a false social security number to get the loan due to his felony criminal history and poor credit score. The credit union approved the loan and provided Nichols $31,718.24 to complete the purchase.

According to court documents, Nichols lost the vehicle when it was impounded following a traffic stop and the credit union lost money on the transaction. When stopped, he attempted to flee. Police found narcotics and a firearm inside the vehicle…
