‘He just couldn’t beat it’: Virginia Beach mother launches foundation after son’s death from Type 1 diabetes complications

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Cathy Staton is sharing her son’s story in hopes of preventing other families from experiencing the same loss.

She said her son, DeVon Antonio Staton, was just 33 when he died in April 2024 after complications from Type 1 diabetes– a chronic autoimmune condition he had lived with since he was a teenager.

“My son was very humble, very kind person,” Staton said. “He was just real quiet, real quiet person. But he was real nice.”…
