Scam alert issued by York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office

YORK-POQUOSON, Va. (WAVY) — York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook Thursday morning, warning the public about a scam alert, including failure to pay tolls, failure to show up for jury duty, and threat of arrest.

Sheriff Ron Montgomery spoke to 10 On Your Side and says, “Well, we have seen an increase recently, a number of complaints from citizens about those types of scams, the emails, the text messages, and phone calls.”

Montgomery stated, “All of these things obviously are scams because no law enforcement agency, nor is the Department of Motor Vehicles in the Commonwealth of Virginia, ever going to send you a text message, an email, or a voicemail saying you have a fine that has to be paid immediately with some threat of further enforcement.”

Here are some examples of scams that are flooding our area:

  • Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails, or text messages asking for personal or financial information.
  • Never send money, gift cards, or payment through unusual methods to someone you do not know.
  • Do not click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown sources.
  • If something feels urgent or pressures you to act quickly, take a step back and verify the request.
  • When in doubt, contact the business or agency directly using a trusted phone number.
  • Talk with family members, friends, or neighbors—especially older adults—about common scams so they know what to watch for.

Make sure you stay informed and take a moment to verify requests to help prevent you from becoming a victim, according to officials…
