Security breach at Chesapeake jail leads to charges against a former employee

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A deputy and a civilian employee face multiple charges following an investigation into the leak of sensitive video and confidential documents from the Chesapeake Correctional Center.

Jeremiah Harrell and Sandra Lewis were charged after the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office discovered unauthorized distribution of materials from within the secure facility.

The investigation focused on the solicitation, theft, and distribution of restricted records and video footage. According to the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office, the breach involved a database and the unauthorized sharing of documents that are strictly prohibited from leaving the correctional center.

Harrell faces multiple counts, including criminal solicitation, theft or destruction of public records by others, and computer trespass. Investigators also charged him with an attempt to commit felonies. Harrell previously appeared in a 2024 interview with WAVY as a captain to discuss specialized training for deputies regarding courthouse and corrections emergencies.
