Fallen firefighters ceremony held in Chesapeake on 30th anniversary of tragedy

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Chesapeake Fire Department held a 30th-anniversary memorial ceremony Wednesday to honor two firefighters who died in the line of duty three decades ago. Frank Young and John Hudgins Jr. were killed while battling a fire on March 18, 1996.

The event began with a ceremony at Fire Station 3 before a procession traveled to Advance Auto location in the Indian River Shopping Center, the site where the tragedy occurred. Thirteen firefighters who served with the department at the time of the fire attended the memorial to pay tribute to Young and Hudgins.

The memorial procession traveled the same path along Military Highway that Young and Hudgins took during their final call in 1996.
