Norfolk principal says new threat involving students deemed not credible

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Less than two weeks after families at the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood were informed about a situation, WAVY learned was an alleged ‘hit list’, the school principal sent another similar email.

Parents alarmed by alleged ‘hit list’ at Norfolk school, NPS admits communication wasn’t timely

The email from Principal Romanda Hannigan sent just before 10 p.m. on March 23 addressed “a situation involving a small number of students.” She explained that while the incident did not impact the entire school community, she decided to send a message to all families about it.

“As part of the response, a threat assessment and wellness check were conducted. Based on the information gathered during that process, the concern was determined not credible.”

This comes after an eighth-grade student at the school allegedly created a ‘hit list’ naming several classmates. WAVY confirmed that the school initially only contacted the families of the students on the list, a day after the list was discovered. Following a 10 On Your Side investigation into this incident, Norfolk Public Schools sent a message to ADL and NPS families. It stated, in part, “As a school division, we did not communicate with all ADL families as quickly as we should have on Friday, March 13. Given the nature of this incident, we understand that timely communication is not just important; it is essential.”…
