VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A long-operating railroad line could soon be abandoned in order to facilitate the expansion of JEB Little Creek-Fort Story.
Earlier this month, Canonie Atlantic Co. filed a petition with the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) to officially abandon a little more than two miles of track running through both Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

In it’s application, the Eastville based company cited the pending sale of its 14-acre yard on the banks of Little Creek to the U.S. Navy as the reason.
The railroad stated that the Navy approached them last year about acquiring the land for national security purposes and to extend the Navy’s control of the waterfront. Currently the railroad’s land along with land owned by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) currently separates the bases Norfolk and Virginia Beach segments…
