Dare and Currituck Commissioners to urge funding for endangered Mid-Currituck Bridge Project

With the fate of the long-delayed Mid-Currituck Bridge hanging in the balance, the Dare County and Currituck County Commissioners are expected to approve resolutions this week urging state and regional officials to help fund the increasingly expensive project.

The extent of the funding crisis emerged when state officials, at a February meeting of the Albemarle Rural Planning Organization (ARPO), said a new analysis put a $1.2 billion price tag on the project, rendering it “not currently financially feasible without additional funding.”

A pivotal moment will likely come at an April 15 ARPO meeting when the delegates from NCDOT District 1 counties will decide whether to keep the project as a regional priority or allow it to go back into the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) ranking system. That system leans heavily toward urban centers with dense populations and heavy year-round traffic that could put the Bridge project at a disadvantage.
