VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — On April 6, 2012, shortly after noon, an F/A-18D Hornet took off on a training mission from Naval Air Station Oceana. Seconds later, it slammed into the Mayfair Mews apartment complex off Birdneck Road in Virginia Beach.
It was later determined both engines on the all-weather supersonic fighter failed, but for different reasons.
