Local musician and protégé of Marvin Gaye uses music to combat gun violence in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — In the heart of downtown Norfolk, local children are finding a new rhythm and a safe haven through music, guided by a Hampton Roads native with deep ties to music history and a personal mission to end gun violence.

Dr. Sesil Jenkins, who describes himself as a protégé of legendary Marvin Gaye, has launched a nonprofit organization called “Take Back Our Children” (TBOC).

For Jenkins, the mission is personal. His cousin, Sierra Jenkins, a 25-year-old reporter for The Virginian Pilot, was tragically killed in a shooting in downtown Norfolk in 2022…
