SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A wildfire near Lummis and Copeland Roads in Suffolk burned approximately 100 acres Thursday evening, forcing the emergency evacuation of nearly 30 horses from a local equestrian center.

Dry conditions continue to keep the region at a high risk for wildfires, according to local officials. While the fire put neighboring residents and animals on high alert, the owners of Harmonia Equestrian say a massive community response ensured their safety.
Jennifer Rose Musicaro and her daughter, Reagan, initially believed the smoke in the distance was a controlled burn. They soon realized the situation was escalating.
