Woman to serve 2 years in prison in son’s 2025 drowning

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Tiffany Lynn Smith walked out of the Norfolk Courthouse Friday after being sentenced to serve two years in prison in the death of her 2-year-old son, who drowned in her pool last year.

She told police that she fell asleep in the bedroom next to the back door of the house and was woken up to the dog barking, then finding her son, who was pronounced dead at the hospital. Court documents also stated that officers noticed an odor of alcohol and that she appeared impaired.

In a courtroom filled with family and supporters as well as a group wearing T-shirts supporting the child, two prosecution witnesses testified that Smith had a drinking problem. The prosecutor did point out that Smith had taken responsibility for her actions that day and described her as a loving mother who always put her child first.
