SUFFOLK, Va. — Virginia has acquired hundreds of acres of forest and wetlands in Suffolk as part of a broader effort to protect environmentally sensitive land and expand wildlife habitat.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation purchased 870 acres from The Nature Conservancy in late April. The property sits about a mile east of the South Quay Sandhills Natural Area Preserve.
Officials say the land is part of a larger, multi-phase project that could eventually total nearly 1,900 acres. Another 1,000-plus acres could be added later this year…
