High gas prices and convenience place more demand on HRT’s OnDemand program

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — With gas prices remaining a constant source of “sticker shock” at the pump, residents of Newport News, Hampton, and Chesapeake are increasingly turning to a more affordable, flexible alternative: Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) OnDemand.

This flexible, app-based transit option is bridging the gap between traditional bus routes and the convenience of a personal vehicle, all for the modest price of $2 per one-way trip.

Brad Tanner has been driving one of the OnDemand vans for two years and sees the daily relief his passengers feel. He recalls a passenger who worked for a natural gas company but didn’t have a personal vehicle. Tanner was able to pick him up at 6:30 every morning…
