Virginia Beach woman faces felony welfare fraud charges; trial delayed until August

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A 40-year-old woman accused of submitting false welfare assistance applications in Virginia Beach is now facing multiple felony charges as the case moves through circuit court.

According to court documents, Shanna McKenna was indicted by a Virginia Beach grand jury on six counts of knowingly making false applications for welfare assistance. The indictments allege the applications were submitted between July 2022 and December 2024. Court records do not specify how much money investigators believe was improperly obtained through the alleged fraud.

Prosecutors claim McKenna knowingly provided false information connected to public assistance benefits in violation of Virginia law. Court documents also state McKenna, who now lives in Idaho, traveled back to Virginia Beach to turn herself in after the charges were filed…
