PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man who fatally shot a 26-year-old woman on Virginia Avenue in 2022 during a verbal altercation was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

According to the Portsmouth Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Jashaun Lee Richardson was sentenced to serve 17 years in prison followed by five years of supervised probation.
Evidence presented by the Commonwealth during trial revealed Shakera Hines met with Richardson outside an apartment in the 1000 block of Virginia Avenue on Jan. 14, 2022. A verbal altercation ensued between the two and Richardson fired a single gunshot before leaving the scene.
Hines suffered a gunshot wound to the head and succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
On Nov. 7, 2025, Richardson was found guilty of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. For the second-degree murder charge, he was sentenced to serve 25 years with 11 years suspended and five years of supervised probation.
