Cool and wet start to Memorial Day weekend

Happy Saturday, DMV! Today is another day you don’t want to forget the umbrella, as rain remains in the forecast. Throughout the morning, we will have a dry period before more rain moves into the DMV.

If you have any plans this afternoon, have the rain gear close by. A stalled front lingers just south of the region; this, in turn, will produce scattered showers with a few rumbles of thunder possible. Highs this afternoon will be cooler than normal, struggling to get out of the 50s and 60s. Breezy easterly winds will keep clouds in the forecast and usher in cooler conditions that will be felt to kick off the holiday weekend. Today will unfortunately be the worst of the weekend days.

If you have plans to head to the beach this weekend. It will be wet and cool, with areas up and down the East Coast struggling to get out of the 50s and 60s. Virginia Beach will be the hot spot this afternoon with highs reaching into the 70s. Windy, wet, and cooler conditions will be expected at the beaches as the same stalled front that is affecting the DMV will be impacting the beaches.

Tonight, showers and a few rumbles of thunder will remain in the forecast, with overnight lows dipping down into the 50s. Heavier pockets of rain could be possible tonight, and with the already saturated ground, there is a slight chance for isolated flooding. Showers will continue through the overnight hours and linger into the early morning hours of your Sunday.

Sunday will be the pick of the weekend as the chance of sunshine returns to the area. On the backside of the system, drier conditions will be possible with some sun returning to the area. Highs tomorrow are expected to be warmer than Saturday, reaching into the 70s. A cold front will move into the area overnight into Monday; however, ahead of that front, showers and storms could develop tomorrow afternoon.

Memorial Day doesn’t look to be a complete washout and will be similar to Sunday, with some sun, warmer temperatures, and the chance of isolated afternoon/evening showers and storms as the cold front finally pushes through. Highs on Monday are expected to reach into the 70s, with a few locations potentially reaching into the 80s.

Rain chances will remain in the forecast through much of next week as another system pushes through the DMV. Highs are expected to be near normal through the first half of the work week.

Here’s a look at your 7-day forecast:

Today: Mainly cloudy with rainy, breezy, and cooler conditions. Highs will be in the mid 50s to the lower 60s. Winds: E 5-9 mph, G: 15-20 mph.
