Man gets 85 years for murder of wheelchair user outside suburban movie theater — projected for release at age 103

More than two years after a judge found him guilty of participating in an armed robbery that left a man dead outside a suburban movie theater in 2017, Torrey Lewis has been sentenced to 85 years in prison.

While CWB Chicago did not report on the original murder case, Lewis drew our attention in 2024 when he was charged with possessing firearms after being shot while on electronic monitoring in the murder case. It was the second time authorities accused him of possessing guns while wearing an ankle monitor after the killing.

In July 2017, Lewis, now 32, and an accomplice approached Timothy Horace outside the Marcus Cinema in Country Club Hills and attempted to steal his vehicle. But Horace, who used a wheelchair, drove a specially equipped vehicle, and the would-be carjackers could not figure out how to operate it, prosecutors said. The robbers ultimately abandoned the vehicle, but not before Horace was shot to death. They also took his gold Rolex watch and cash, according to prosecutors…
