‘The birthplace of gospel music’ celebrates 124th anniversary in Bronzeville

CHICAGO (WGN) — Known as the birthplace of gospel music, Bronzeville’s Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church “was a mega church before mega church was a word,” and Sunday served as celebration for its lasting legacy in the community.

It’s 11 a.m. on a South Side Sunday morning.

As parishioners walked up to the church on the corner of 45th and Vincennes, the sounds of gospel praise and worship gently emanated from inside. As they reached the matte black and grey doors of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist, hand clapping and foot stomping from the early birds joined the cacophony of music that enveloped the chapel…
