Violent Chicago weekend leaves at least 6 dead, sparks renewed push for gun violence prevention

CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — A surge of gun violence across Chicago over the weekend left at least 6 people dead and dozens more injured, prompting renewed calls from city leaders and community advocates for stronger, long-term gun violence prevention efforts.

Chicago police said at least 39 people were shot, six fatally, in shootings reported between Friday evening and late Sunday, according to ABC7 Chicago. Police reported more than two dozen shooting incidents citywide during that period.

One of the most serious incidents occurred late Friday night on the city’s Far South Side, where police said a red SUV pulled up to a large Juneteenth gathering near West 95th Street and South Wentworth Avenue and gunfire erupted.
