Video captured the scene at around 3 a.m. near South Canal Street and West 18th Street, showing cars blocking the roadway while onlookers packed the intersection.
According to NBC Chicago, Chicago police said no charges were filed in connection with the incident, and the department did not provide additional details beyond confirming the takeover occurred. The outlet’s video shows the pickup truck circling tight loops as spectators stood just feet away, a maneuver that has led to serious injuries at similar gatherings elsewhere in the city.
A Pattern With a Violent History in Pilsen
This isn’t the first time Pilsen has seen a takeover turn dangerous. In February 2023, a street takeover near Cermak Road and Canalport Avenue in the neighborhood resulted in a woman being thrown from a stunt vehicle’s passenger window and run over during drifting maneuvers, according to CBS News. Car club organizers told the station that participants frequently obscure or remove license plates specifically to avoid police identification after these events break up.
Pilsen’s 25th Ward Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, who has represented the ward since 2019, has said city impoundment ordinances amount to little more than temporary fixes that fail to address what actually drives organized takeover meetups, per the same CBS News report. His comments came after the 2023 Cermak Road incident, but the underlying frustration echoes across City Hall as similar gatherings keep popping up.
