BLUE ISLAND, Ill. (WGN) — Teachers and community members in Blue Island, Alsip, Crestwood and Robbins demanded answers on alleged unsanitary conditions at a school board meeting Tuesday night.
Educators and parents packed a District 130 (D130) school board meeting to voice their concerns directly to the board. Teachers at the board meeting told WGN-TV problems started after the district’s 130 custodians were laid off on Aug. 19, leaving cleaning responsibilities to teachers and staff. Now, they say cleaning has fallen so far behind that they are seeing a wide variety of unsanitary conditions.
“I feel very betrayed. I feel angry, how [hard we worked],” said Vicky Diaz, one of the custodians who was laid off. “Me and my fellow coworkers worked the whole summer to deep clean the schools. Every building was deep cleaned before the students came back [on] August the 17th. And we all got dismissed on the 19th. This is this is unacceptable.”…
