CHICAGO — The National Transportation Safety Board on Monday called for a ban on train crews riding railcars during shoving moves, saying the switching practice has led to 14 deaths since 2020.
In a press conference today (Sept. 21) at Chicago Union Station, the NTSB urged the Federal Railroad Administration and every Class I to take action. Board member Tom Chapman said the NTSB has investigated 18 incidents involving shoving moves since October 2020, and that in those incidents, 14 workers were killed and four were seriously injured.
