Pregnant woman struggled for 3 minutes to tell 911 that she had been shot — on a block that used to have ShotSpotter

A woman who is seven months pregnant struggled for at least three minutes to tell Chicago 911 operators she had been shot Friday night, according to records and radio transmissions reviewed by CWB Chicago. The emergency response was further delayed because nobody else reported the shooting and the local ShotSpotter network, which used to monitor the block for gunfire 24/7, was disconnected by Mayor Brandon Johnson in 2024.

The 34-year-old woman was outside in the 1400 block of South Karlov Avenue when a dark-colored SUV pulled up around 10:45 p.m. Friday, according to police radio transmissions. Three men were inside the vehicle, the woman later told officers, and someone in the SUV fired shots before it sped southbound.

Chicago police said the shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m., but radio traffic indicates the woman first contacted 911 at least 30 minutes earlier…
