New treatment for deadly parvovirus in dogs seeing positive results

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — PAWS Chicago is seeing positive results with a new treatment for the deadly parvovirus in dogs.

“It’s been devastating and heartbreaking, you know, seeing parvo,” said Dr. Alycia Eisenstein.

She is the medical director of PAWS Chicago, the only shelter in the city providing the first authorized antibody for parvovirus. Unvaccinated dogs get infected from the fecal matter of infected dogs.

Eisenstein spoke to CBS 2 .

“They will end up passing from severe dehydration and then secondary infection, so it is a devastating disease,” she said.

One dog, a Shih Tzu named Luna, has received the treatment under the care of Dr. Emily Yacker.

“She seems so much brighter today. The biggest thing that’s changed over the last 24 hours is that she started eating on her own, which is so important,” she told CBS 2.

PAWS Chicago is working with Chicago Animal Care and Control, treating puppies that have tested positive for parvo.
