String of mail thefts in Kenwood, Hyde Park triggers warning from CPD

CHICAGO — Police are warning some South Side residents to be on the lookout following a string of thefts at apartment buildings over the past month.

According to Chicago police, the thefts occurred at buildings in Kenwood and Hyde Park between Tuesday, Jan. 9, and Thursday, Jan. 25.

Officers say during each incident, a man was able to enter apartment building lobbies by forcing a door open before stealing packages from inside.

Chicago police offered the following list of times and locations where the mail thefts occurred :

  • 5000 block of South Cornell Avenue in Kenwood at around 5 a.m. on Jan. 9.
  • 5100 block of South Ingleside Avenue in Hyde Park at around 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 11.
  • 5300 block of South Cornell Avenue in Hyde Park between 10:50 a.m. on Jan. 24, and 10:50 a.m. on Jan. 25.

Police say the individual responsible is believed to be between 30 and 50 years of age and was spotted wearing dark-colored clothing during each incident.
