Mayor says Chicago won’t enforce 60-day limit for migrants until March

CHICAGO — Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city will again delay enforcing a 60-day limit for asylum seekers living in city-run shelters.

The migrants were slated to be evicted before the end of the week.

Instead, more than 5,600 migrants who had an original exit date of Jan. 16 and Feb. 29 will get a 60 day extension.

More than 2,100 migrants with an exit date of March 1 to March 28 will get a 30 day extension from their planned exit date.

New arrivals coming to Chicago starting on Monday will get the standard 60-day notice.

In addition, nearly 6,000 who arrived between Aug. 1 and Nov. 16 last year are eligible for the state’s three-month rental assistance program and will get 60 day notices starting Feb. 1.

Johnson made the announcement on Monday and was joined by more than two dozen aldermen, public health officials and faith leaders.

“The emergency shelter system was built on the premise that shelter stays would be short term as we work with county, state federal and non profit partners to help new arrivals develop a plan and get them on their feet,” Brandie Knazze, the commissioner with the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services, said.
