Body found in East Chicago basement during search warrant

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — A body was found in East Chicago Tuesday morning while officers were looking for a wanted suspect.

At around 11 a.m., East Chicago police’s gang and narcotics division, along with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, were in the 4000 block of Deal Street.

While inside the residence, multiple officers smelled a foul odor coming from the basement. A bed in the basement was observed covered with maggots and clothes, police said.

After securing a search warrant, police discovered a body underneath the pile of clothes.

Two persons of interest were taken into custody.

The cause of death and the identity have not been released at this time.
