Illinois lawmaker wants to limit reasons allowing cops to pull over drivers

( WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A state lawmaker has introduced legislation to place significant limits on when police in Illinois can pull over drivers, to raise awareness about racial disparity in traffic stops.

Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, said during 2022 in the city of Chicago, police pulled over more than four times as many Black drivers as whites, even though the city has more white residents.

He says racial disparity in traffic stops occurs across Illinois.

Slaughter’s bill would prevent police from pulling over drivers for a variety of offenses, including speeding by up to 25 miles per hour and not having valid license plates.

The lawmaker says he doesn’t expect his bill to pass, but he hopes it will lead to a conversation about ways to reduce racial disparity in traffic stops.
