CHICAGO — The push to reduce gun violence on Chicago’s streets is expanding.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, Governor JB Pritzker, non-profit and business leaders all came together Thursday to announce a new plan called “Scaling Community Violence Intervention for a Safer Chicago,” or “SC2.”
Much of this work is done by outreach workers from two-dozen organizations, working on the ground to deescalate conflicts.
The plan calls for an alignment of every level of government with the business and philanthropic communities to work towards safety and more jobs.
They estimate 20,000 Chicagoans are at the highest risk of shooting someone or becoming victims of gun violence. The goal is to reach half of those people in the next five years, and 75 percent in the next 10 years — connecting them with critical services to save lives.
These efforts will be focused on seven neighborhoods, primarily on the city’s south and west sides.
