Questions linger after body of missing woman found in basement of East Chicago home

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — An investigation continues in Northwest Indiana after the body of a woman, who was previously reported missing, was discovered inside an East Chicago home.

According to the East Chicago Police Department, investigators with the Gang and Narcotics Division and the Lake County Sheriff Warrant Division initially went to a home Tuesday morning in the area of 141st and Deal Street looking for a wanted man.

When they located the man they were searching for at a home in the 4000 block of Deal St., police said they also made a grim discovery.

It was an overwhelming smell inside the home that led authorities to finding the body of a woman, now identified as Clarissa Almodovar, 30, reported missing in Jan. 2023.

“It’s just sad. It’s just really sad that, you know, that happened to her,” Sally Rivera, a resident in the area, said.

East Chicago police said officers smelled a ‘strong and foul odor’ coming from the basement and observed a bed covered with clothes and maggots.
