EVANSTON, Ill. — A mother and daughter from Chicago are uninjured after police say a man allegedly jumped onto their vehicle and smashed in the windshield and sunroof in Evanston on Friday.

According to Evanston police, firefighters with the local fire department witnessed the alleged attack that unfolded just before 4 p.m. along Emerson Street, near Dodge Avenue.

Officers say a 33-year-old man allegedly jumped on top of a Toyota Rav 4, just east of Dodge Avenue, and began damaging the vehicle while a mother and her 16-year-old daughter were inside.

Police say fire crews attempted to intervene, but the man, who officers say is an Evanston resident, reportedly appeared combative, so fire crews called police for assistance.

Police say the mother and daughter were then able to escape from the car without injury.

When officers arrived on the scene, the man was allegedly still on top of the vehicle. Officers say de-escalation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man had to be removed.
