Chicago Public Schools Proposes Late Start to 2024-25 School Year for Democratic National Convention

City responds to logistical challenges, public safety concerns amidst convention preparations

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is considering modifications to its academic calendar for the 2024-25 school year to address logistical and public safety requirements tied to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) scheduled for August, as revealed by the district on Thursday.

The proposed adjustment entails a delayed start to the academic year, with CPS recommending classes commence on Monday, August 26, a week later than the traditional start date, following the culmination of the DNC on August 22.

Chicago is gearing up to host the DNC at the United Center on the city’s West Side, anticipating over 75,000 visitors during the event. This shift in the academic calendar aims to align with the heightened demands on city resources and public safety officials during the convention, drawing national attention to Chicago amidst ongoing challenges such as gun violence, protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the persisting migrant crisis.
