Death penalty possible for 3 accused in carjacking, murder spree in Chicago, surrounding suburbs

CHICAGO — Three Chicago residents have been indicted on federal charges in connection with a deadly dayslong crime spree in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs in September of 2020.

According to a federal superseding indictment returned on Thursday, 22-year-old Edson Resendez, 22-year-old Maverick Cela, and 23-year-old Prezila Apreza have been charged with firearm offenses, conspiracy, and carjacking.

Federal prosecutors say the charges stem from the group’s alleged involvement in a string of carjackings and two murders that unfolded over a 10-day period between Sept. 11 and Sept. 21.
