Despite arrests of carjackers, crime continues to spike in Chicago
Three Chicago residents have been indicted for their involvement in a series of violent carjackings amidst a significant uptick in vehicle thefts and robberies nationwide.
The federal indictment reveals the alarming escalation of carjacking incidents in Chicafgo, involving the use of firearms to intimidate victims, resulting in fatal shootings and subsequent illicit activities using stolen vehicles and victims’ credit cards. These egregious crimes underscore a growing crisis plaguing urban centers across the country.
As per the Council on Criminal Justice, carjackings have surged dramatically in several U.S. cities since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the alarmine rise in Chicago, Washington D.C. has experienced a staggering increase, with incidents multiplying over five times from 2019 to 2023. Among the recent victims in the nation’s capital are prominent figures, including a former Trump administration official, a Texas congressperson, and an FBI agent.
