Veterans, seniors celebrated at annual luncheon in Englewood

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson served up some hugs and handshakes Saturday afternoon at a yearly celebration of veterans and seniors on the South Side.

It was the first time a sitting mayor has joined in on the fun that is the 16th Ward’s annual luncheon.

“Again, happy Valentine’s Day, and I really have enjoyed these first nine months in office, and I cannot wait to continue to serve you all for the next 23 years,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “God bless you all.”

Organized by Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th) and now in its fifth year, local vets and seniors enjoyed music from a live blues band, heaping plates of soul food and a raffle at Kennedy King College’s Building U.

“This day is designated just to celebrate [and] honor those who have helped raise me as a daughter of Englewood,” Coleman said.

Among those in attendance was Marvin Ware, a U.S. Navy veteran who’s now in his 60s.
