Parents should ask about guns in the home before playdate, child advocates say

( WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A survey finds many parents in Illinois don’t ask about guns in the homes of their children’s friends before allowing their kids to visit.

Fewer than 4 out of 10 of the parents, step-parents and guardians responding to the survey by Lurie Children’s Hospital said they asked about guns in the homes of their children’s friends.

“It’s a health issue,” says Dr. Karen Sheehan, a Lurie pediatrician. “And similar to how you might ask if your child had a nut allergy if there’s nuts in the playdate’s home, it would be the same thing to ask if there’s a gun in the home. It’s not a political issue. It’s a health issue.”

Sheehan said parents should also ask about how firearms are stored and secured.
