CTU President Denies Involvement in Chicago Mayor’s Attempts to Remove CPS CEO Pedro Martinez

But Davis does say Martinez isn’t doing enough to fund CPS, teachers at level she wants despite CEO’s assertion this would bankrupt CPS

CHICAGO — As tensions escalate between Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Pedro Martinez, Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Stacy Davis Gates publicly distanced herself from calls to remove Martinez. On Monday night, Davis Gates addressed growing speculation about her role in the situation, as Martinez reportedly refused the mayor’s request to step down during ongoing contract negotiations with the union.

Martinez, who has faced pressure to resign, is resisting the move due to his contract, which stipulates a six-month notice period for termination. While the CTU is known as a strong political force in the city, Davis Gates denied any direct involvement in the mayor’s apparent push to oust the CEO.

The CTU has been vocal on social media, with several members expressing support for Martinez’s removal. However, Davis Gates emphasized that these opinions do not represent her official stance, clarifying her position when asked if she supported the Board of Education terminating Martinez.
