South suburban police chase results in gunfire, chaotic search

RIVERDALE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A pursuit of a stolen car in the south suburbs Sunday afternoon ended in gunfire and a massive manhunt.

Police in Riverdale said officers had spotted a stolen vehicle and tried to pull it over around 12:15 p.m. That’s when the car went up onto a sidewalk and struck another vehicle near 146th and Halsted.

Police said a passenger got out of the stolen car and pointed a gun at officers. One of the officers then fired multiple shots at the suspects, though it’s not clear if they were hit.

Two people were arrested at the scene, but several others ran into neighboring Harvey.

A Cook County Sheriff’s helicopter, an Illinois State Police airplane and multiple K-9 units searched for the suspects.

Just a short time later, someone was dropped off at a nearby hospital, with what police say were consistent injuries from the incident.
