Abraham Lincoln Statue Vandalized With Red Paint On Indigenous Peoples Day

LINCOLN PARK — An Abraham Lincoln statue in Lincoln Park was vandalized for at least the second time in two years around Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Standing Lincoln statue in the 1700 block of North Stockton Drive was “defaced” with spray paint overnight Monday, police said.

Splashes of red spray paint covered the statue’s arms, with “Lincoln was an executioner,” “Land Back” and “May all empires fall from Turtle Island to Palestine” written around it.

No injuries were reported, and there have been no arrests, police said.

Vandals also spray painted “Avenge the Dakota 38,” a reference to an order by Lincoln to publicly execute 38 Dakota men during the United States-Dakota War of 1862.

In October 2022, the same messaging was spray painted on the statue by an anonymous group calling themselves “resistors of colonial violence” who sought to memorialize the Dakota 38 around Indigenous Peoples Day, according to the Sun-Times.

A statue of a “Young Lincoln” in Senn Park was also vandalized in November 2022 .
