Hammond man crashes into Indiana troopers’ vehicle, now facing serious charges

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. — Two Indiana State Police troopers escaped serious injury when a driver crashed into one of their vehicles overnight.

According to ISP, two troopers pulled over a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 80 around 2:15 a.m. Monday. They were performing a routine sobriety field test when another driver crashed into the rear of the police Dodge Charger.

The impact caused debris to strike the accompanying trooper’s vehicle as well, causing damage.

The suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Kyle Barbour of Hammong, sped off but was eventually arrested. Police add that Barbour attempted to enter the marked vehicle of a Hammond Fire Battalion Chief amid his escape, albeit unsuccessfully.

ISP charged Barbour with the following misdemeanors:

  • Operating While Intoxicated/Impaired -Endangering a Person- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Failure to Report a Crash- Class B Misdemeanor
  • Resisting Law Enforcement- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Reckless Driving Causing Property Damage- Class B Misdemeanor
