2 arrested after rideshare carjacking, police chase on South Side

CHICAGO — A rideshare driver was carjacked overnight, leading to a police chase on the city’s South Side.

The incident happened around 10:40 p.m. Thursday on the 7400 block of South Wabash Avenue.

Chicago police said a 44-year-old male rideshare driver was dropping off two juveniles, when they pulled out guns and forced the man out of his vehicle.

The juveniles drove off in the man’s 2017 Dodge Journey.

According to Illinois State Police, troopers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and a foot pursuit ensued. ISP took two offenders into custody.

Police quickly arrived on scene and is handling the initial hijacking report. ISP sought charges against the juvenile driver of the stolen vehicle for Criminal Trespass to Motor Vehicle and Resisting Arrest.

Uber released the following statement Friday in regards to the carjacking:

“The details of what this driver experienced are incredibly distressing, and we’re grateful he was not injured. We banned the account holder’s access to the Uber platform as soon as we were made aware of the incident. We will assist law enforcement with their investigation in any way possible.”
