Nine-year-old girl among 2 shot near North Side school: Police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Two people, including a young girl, were sent to area hospitals Friday afternoon after they were shot near a North Side elementary school.

According to Chicago Police, the incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. on Winthrop Avenue, near Winona Street, just steps away from William C. Goudy Technology Academy. A 9-year-old girl and 45-year-old man were standing near a sidewalk when they were hit by gunfire, police said.

They added it’s unclear where the bullets came from.

The girl suffered a graze wound to the calf and was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good condition. The man was hit in the arm and sent to Illinois Masonic Hospital, police said. He too was initially described to be in good condition.

Police have no one in custody. Area detectives are handling the investigation.
