Tragic End to Funeral Procession as Woman is Fatally Shot in South Chicago Suburb

Shock, sorrow hit the south suburban community as gunfire claims a life during a solemn procession

DIXMOOR, Ill. – In a heartbreaking turn of events, a funeral procession in Dixmoor turned deadly when a woman was shot and killed on Saturday afternoon. At approximately 12:01 p.m., authorities responded to a call at 147th Street and Seeley Avenue, where they discovered a white Jaguar SUV crashed into a nearby home, according to a statement from Dixmoor Police Chief Lionel Smith.

Upon arrival, police found 34-year-old Rhomesha Turner, from Calumet Park, inside the vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. Turner had been participating in the procession, which had recently departed from St. Mark’s Church in Harvey.

Emergency responders rushed her to University of Chicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital, but tragically, she did not survive. Officials noted that the shooting seems to be an isolated incident, although Dixmoor police and the Illinois State Police are actively investigating the case.
