Chicago firefighter seriously injured after falling through West Side roof

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A firefighter was injured during a fall while fighting a fire in Humboldt Park on Chicago’s West Side Sunday.

The three-story multi-unit building on Hamlin near Chicago Avenue went up in flames shortly after 6 p.m.

April Rimmer told CBS News Chicago she saw the fire when she was leaving a baby shower nearby and called 911.

“There was people running from the building, and then you had residents across the street yelling out there’s people inside and they have to get out. It was bad,” Rimmer said.

Initial reports are that a firefighter on the roof fell through a light shaft. He was conscious when he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

Witnesses say items gathered by a known hoarder are believed to have fueled the fire. It’s not clear what started it.
