(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The outgoing Cook County State’s Attorney is speaking about the ongoing plague of gun violence following last week’s shooting death of a Chicago Police Officer.
Kim Foxx stood with police and Mayor Johnson when charges were announced in the South side shooting death of Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez.
Foxx, who has faced criticism for not doing enough to combat crime, said Martinez’s murder again brings up a fact that cannot be ignored.
“I have very few of these press conferences left. Let me say the thing that needs to be said that we all know in this room. We have an over proliferation of guns in the city of Chicago and the County of Cook,” Foxx said.
“We have a gun problem and we have had a gun problem for a really long time. So when the question is when we have an over proliferation of guns and we have people committing offenses that may not otherwise be violent, but they have a gun attached to them. The likelihood of a deadly outcome increases.”
There have been reports in recent years that as many as 60% of illegal guns in Chicago come from out of state.
