Parents of Michigan woman found dead in Chicago ask court to block her husband from claiming her remains

(WWJ) The parents of a Farmington Hills native are fighting to get their daughter’s body back.

Caitlan Tracey, 36, of New Buffalo, Michigan, was found dead in an apartment stairwell in downtown Chicago last month. According to court documents, Tracey fell 24 flights of stairs in her husband’s high rise on the 1200 block of Prairie Street on Oct. 27.

The Chicago Sun Times reports Tracey’s parents filed a petition in probate court in Berrien County, Michigan, where she lived, seeking possession of their daughter’s remains and the right to control her funeral.

Currently, Tracey’s husband has legal control of the remains, but is under investigation for alleged domestic violence. Court records show that Tracey had a restraining order against her husband, who’d reported her missing before her body was found.

A Michigan Judge ruled in favor of the parents, allowing the Chicago medical examiner to delay releasing the remains.

On Friday, a Chicago-area judge (Cook County) is expected to decide whether to lift a temporary restraining order preventing the medical examiner from releasing Tracey’s body.
